NFL Suspends Panthers’ Tre’von Moehrig One Game for Striking 49ers’ Jauan Jennings
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The NFL has suspended Carolina Panthers defensive back Tre’von Moehrig for one game after he struck San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jauan Jennings in the groin area during a recent game, officials said Tuesday.
The incident occurred late in the fourth quarter of the game, which the 49ers won 20-9. Following a run play, Moehrig punched Jennings in the groin, causing Jennings to double over in pain and retreat. After the game ended, Jennings confronted Moehrig and threw a punch toward his head, but was restrained by teammates and staff.
Jennings described his reaction as a response to what he called “childish behavior,” stating the punch came unexpectedly. “It was just out of nowhere,” Jennings said. “It’s probably just the history of me playing ball. I play hard. I’m physically stronger than a lot of DBs out there. A lot of things happen in between the whistle with me at least.”
Moehrig explained that the groin strike was a reaction to physical play during the game, saying, “He was pushing me in the back and stuff, so, you know. That’s really all it was. There really isn’t much to it. It was just that, you know what I’m saying? Like I said, I’ll take that one. He wanted to do a little dirty stuff, so. … It is what it is man.”
San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan commented on the incident, expressing pride in Jennings for maintaining composure. “(Moehrig) took a cheap shot and hit him in the balls, and I was real proud of Jauan for not losing his mind out there and get him to the sideline,” Shanahan said during a postgame press conference.
The NFL cited a violation of Rule 12, Section 3, Article 1, which addresses acts contrary to the principles of sportsmanship, as the basis for Moehrig’s suspension. Moehrig is reportedly appealing the one-game suspension.
The altercation occurred during a game at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, on November 24, 2025. The Panthers and 49ers have yet to comment further on the disciplinary action.
