Ohio Surgeon Arrested in Connection with Double Homicide of Ex-Wife and Her Husband
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Michael David McKee, a 39-year-old vascular surgeon from Chicago, was arrested on Saturday in connection with the fatal shooting of his ex-wife, Monique Tepe, and her husband, Dr. Spencer Tepe, a dentist, at their Columbus home on December 30. Authorities charged McKee with two counts of murder following a thorough investigation that included surveillance footage and vehicle tracking.
Police responded to the Weinland Park neighborhood residence after Spencer Tepe failed to show up for work. Upon arrival, officers discovered both Spencer, 37, and Monique, 39, dead from gunshot wounds inside their home. The couple was preparing to celebrate their fifth wedding anniversary, according to family members.
Michael McKee and Monique Tepe were married from 2015 until their divorce in 2017, which was reportedly amicable. At the time of the divorce, McKee was living in Virginia. The couple had no children together, but Monique and Spencer Tepe shared two young children who were found unharmed at the scene.
Authorities tracked McKee through neighborhood surveillance cameras that captured his vehicle arriving near the Tepe residence shortly before the estimated time of the murders, between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. on December 30. Additional footage showed McKee walking in an alley near the home around the time of the crime. Police later located his vehicle near his workplace in Rockford, Illinois, and arrested him there.
McKee was booked at the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office and is expected to be extradited to Franklin County, Ohio, where a hearing is scheduled for January 12. Law enforcement officials have not publicly disclosed a motive for the shootings.
The investigation highlights the critical role of surveillance technology and inter-agency cooperation in solving violent crimes. The Columbus Police Department utilized neighborhood cameras to establish McKee’s presence near the crime scene, a tactic increasingly employed by law enforcement nationwide.
