16 December 2025 U.S. News

BRONX, N.Y. — A Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) bus lost control and crashed into several vehicles across a stretch of the Bronx on Monday afternoon, injuring eight people including the bus driver. The incident, which unfolded shortly before 2 p.m. between Cauldwell Avenue and Trinity Avenue, prompted a swift emergency response and left the community shaken.

According to the New York City Fire Department, six vehicles were struck as the bus careened over roughly six blocks. Two of the collisions occurred near a school on East 163rd Street and Caldwell Avenue, where one vehicle was pushed into a light pole and another was hit on its side. Further along the route, an SUV was shoved onto the sidewalk while the rear of a blue coupe was severely damaged.

Video footage captured from inside the bus reveals panicked passengers screaming as the vehicle went out of control. The driver and seven passengers sustained injuries and were transported to Lincoln Medical Center. The current conditions of those injured have not been released.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash, with the MTA examining several factors including mechanical failure, weather conditions, and the driver’s medical status. Police sources told WABC-TV that the bus was ascending a hill when the driver attempted to accelerate, at which point a mechanical failure reportedly occurred. It is believed the driver may have engaged the emergency brake, causing the bus to slide uncontrollably.

The MTA has a history of rigorous safety protocols and vehicle maintenance standards, but incidents such as this underscore the challenges of operating a vast transit system in a busy urban environment. The agency has pledged full cooperation with investigators and will release updates as the inquiry progresses.

Transportation safety remains a critical concern for New York City, which relies heavily on public transit for millions of daily commuters. The Federal Transit Administration provides oversight and funding to ensure that agencies like the MTA adhere to national safety standards.

Residents and commuters in the Bronx expressed concern following the crash, highlighting the importance of reliable and safe public transportation. The incident has also reignited discussions about vehicle maintenance and driver health monitoring within the MTA system.

Officials urge anyone with additional information or video footage of the crash to come forward to assist with the investigation. Meanwhile, emergency responders and medical personnel continue to provide care for those affected.
