Passenger Arrested After Attempting to Open Plane Door Mid-Flight on Cathay Pacific Flight
HONG KONG — Authorities detained a passenger on a Cathay Pacific flight after he allegedly tried to open an aircraft door while the plane was still in mid-air, officials confirmed on December 12, 2025. The incident occurred on Flight CX811, which departed from Boston and was en route to Hong Kong International Airport.
According to Cathay Pacific, the airline’s cabin crew swiftly intervened upon noticing the passenger’s attempt to open the door. The crew immediately inspected the door to ensure it remained securely closed and promptly reported the situation to local authorities and police. Fortunately, no injuries were reported among passengers or crew members, and the flight landed safely early on December 11.
Hong Kong police confirmed the arrest of a 20-year-old male from mainland China on suspicion of violating the city’s Aviation Security Ordinance. The case has been handed over to law enforcement for further investigation. The airline emphasized that the safety of its customers and crew remains its highest priority, stating, “At Cathay, the safety of our customers and crew guides every decision we make.”
This incident echoes similar cases worldwide where passengers have attempted to interfere with aircraft doors during flight. For instance, in November 2025, a KLM Airlines flight departing from Atlanta was delayed after an unruly passenger opened an emergency exit door while the plane was taxiing, deploying the inflatable slide. The aircraft returned to the gate, and police boarded the plane to address the security breach. Earlier this year, a U.S. Marine traveling from Tokyo intervened to restrain a man who tried to open an emergency exit door mid-flight.
Airline safety protocols and regulations are governed by strict standards set forth by agencies such as the Federal Aviation Administration and the U.S. Department of Transportation. These agencies work closely with international counterparts to ensure the security and safety of commercial flights worldwide.
Passengers are reminded that tampering with aircraft doors or emergency exits is a serious offense that jeopardizes the safety of all onboard and carries significant legal consequences. The Transportation Security Administration and other aviation security bodies continue to enforce stringent measures to prevent such incidents.
As investigations proceed, authorities in Hong Kong are reviewing the circumstances surrounding the passenger’s actions and the airline’s response. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the critical importance of adhering to safety regulations during air travel and the vigilance required by airline personnel to maintain order in the skies.
