Pope Leo XIV Urges Global Peace in First Christmas Message Amid Middle East and Ukraine Conflicts
VATICAN CITY — On Christmas Day 2025, Pope Leo XIV delivered a heartfelt plea for peace in his first-ever Christmas “Urbi et Orbi” message, addressing tens of thousands gathered in St. Peter’s Square and millions worldwide. The pontiff, who became the first U.S.-born pope earlier this year, called for an end to the ongoing violence in the Middle East and the Russia-Ukraine war, urging world leaders to embrace dialogue over conflict.
In a solemn address from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, Pope Leo XIV prayed for justice and stability in Lebanon, Palestine, Israel, and Syria, regions long scarred by strife and unrest. His message underscored the urgency of halting hostilities and fostering reconciliation amid decades of turmoil. Turning to Eastern Europe, the pope implored the international community to support efforts to end the brutal war in Ukraine, where millions continue to suffer amid relentless fighting.
“May the clamor of weapons cease, and may the parties involved, with the support and commitment of the international community, find the courage to engage in sincere, direct and respectful dialogue,” he said, echoing calls made by global leaders and diplomats. The pope’s appeal aligns with ongoing diplomatic efforts, including those supported by the U.S. Department of State, to broker peace in the region.
Pope Leo also extended his prayers to civilians caught in other global conflicts, including parts of Africa and Asia, highlighting the plight of those suffering from political instability, religious persecution, and terrorism. He emphasized the importance of solidarity with vulnerable populations, referencing the hardships faced by inhabitants of Gaza, the Yemeni people enduring famine and poverty, and refugees risking perilous journeys across the Mediterranean and the Americas.
“In becoming man, Jesus took upon himself our fragility, identifying with each one of us: with those who have nothing left and have lost everything,” the pope said, urging the faithful and leaders alike to reject violence and indifference. His message resonated on a day traditionally dedicated to hope, compassion, and unity.
Since his election in May 2025 following the death of Pope Francis, Pope Leo XIV has made peace a central theme of his papacy. He has actively engaged in diplomatic outreach, including a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and expressed willingness to host peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, a position reaffirmed by the Vatican in July.
The pope’s Christmas message comes amid heightened tensions and ongoing violence in both the Middle East and Eastern Europe. The United Nations continues to call for ceasefires and humanitarian access in these regions, as detailed by the United Nations Peacekeeping efforts. Pope Leo’s appeal for dialogue and justice echoes these international calls.
As the world reflects on the significance of Christmas, Pope Leo XIV’s inaugural Urbi et Orbi blessing serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring need for peace and compassion. “On this holy day, let us open our hearts to our brothers and sisters who are in need or in pain. In doing so, we open our hearts to the Child Jesus, who welcomes us with open arms and reveals his divinity to us,” he concluded.
His message not only marks a milestone in his young papacy but also reinforces the Vatican’s role as a moral voice encouraging global harmony during turbulent times.
