Raccoon Breaks Into Virginia Liquor Store, Passes Out in Bathroom
ASHLAND, Va. — December 5, 2025 — A raccoon broke into an ABC liquor store in Ashland, Virginia, where it caused damage by ransacking several shelves and consuming various types of liquor before passing out in the store’s bathroom, officials said.
Hanover County Animal Protection and Shelter reported that an animal control officer responded Saturday to the store following a report of an animal break-in. Upon arrival, the officer found that the raccoon had broken bottles and sampled multiple varieties of alcohol.
The raccoon, described by officials as a “masked bandit,” was found asleep on the bathroom floor after its “liquor-fueled rampage.” The officer secured the animal and transported it back to the shelter to sober up before further handling.
Officials noted that the raccoon was uninjured aside from what they humorously described as “maybe a hangover and poor life choices.” After the animal had recovered, it was released back into the wild.
The incident highlights an unusual case of wildlife interacting with human environments in unexpected ways, prompting a response from local animal control to ensure the safety of both the animal and the public.
