Texas Rep. Troy Nehls to Retire, Twin Brother Announces Candidacy for Seat
HOUSTON, Texas — November 30, 2025 — Rep. Troy Nehls, a Republican from Texas and ally of former President Donald Trump, announced he will not seek re-election in 2026, citing a desire to focus on his family. Nehls, who has served in the U.S. House of Representatives since 2021, made the decision after discussions with his wife and daughters over the Thanksgiving holiday, officials said.
Nehls, 57, informed Trump of his plans before making the announcement public. “Before making this decision, I called President Trump personally to let him know of my plans,” Nehls said. “President Trump has always been a strong ally for our district and a true friend, and I wanted him to hear it from me first.”
The congressman has a background in law enforcement and military service, including over 30 years as a police officer, constable, and Fort Bend County Sheriff, as well as deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan as a member of the U.S. Army Reserves. He has represented his district in Congress for six years.
During his tenure, Nehls has been a vocal supporter of Trump’s immigration policies, including backing legislation aimed at removing barriers to deporting illegal migrants. The House Judiciary Committee recently advanced his bill on this issue. He also co-sponsored a bill to place Trump on the $100 bill and advocated renaming Dulles International Airport after the former president.
Following Nehls’ retirement announcement, his identical twin brother, Trever Nehls, declared his candidacy to succeed him in Congress. Trever Nehls expressed honor at the opportunity to run for the seat.
Troy Nehls joins a growing number of Republican lawmakers who have decided not to seek re-election, including Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, who announced plans to step down earlier this month amid internal party disputes.
In his statement, Troy Nehls expressed gratitude for his years of public service and the support he received. “Serving this country in the military, serving our community in law enforcement, and serving this district in Congress has been the honor of my life,” he said. “Thank you for your trust, your friendship, and your prayers.”
The upcoming 2026 election will determine who will fill the seat vacated by Nehls, with his twin brother among the candidates seeking to continue representation of the district.
