Three Palestinians Arrested for Arson at West Bank Catholic Church Amid Rising Religious Tensions

JENIN, West Bank — Three Palestinians were taken into custody following an arson attack targeting a Christmas tree and a Nativity scene at the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in the Israeli-occupied West Bank city of Jenin. The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday, around 3 a.m., according to the church authorities.

Palestinian Authority Police conducted an investigation after reviewing surveillance footage from the church premises, leading to the arrests. Authorities also confiscated tools believed to have been used in the attack. The police condemned the act as an attempt to incite sectarian and religious tensions in the region, underscoring the fragile coexistence in the West Bank.

Photos shared by the church on social media revealed the charred remains of a synthetic Christmas tree, stripped of its green plastic branches, with red and gold ornaments scattered across the courtyard. Despite the damage, the church swiftly replaced the tree, erecting a new one in time for Christmas Mass. A special ceremony followed, attended by local Muslim and Christian leaders as well as politicians, emphasizing solidarity and resilience.

Rev. Amer Jubran, the local priest at Holy Redeemer Church, described the arson as an isolated incident and stressed the unity of the city’s diverse communities. “This occasion reaffirmed that attempts to harm religious symbols will never diminish the spirit of the city nor the faith of its people,” the church stated.

The Christian community in the West Bank, which constitutes roughly 1-2% of the area’s approximately 3 million residents, has been increasingly vulnerable to threats from various extremist elements. Both Israeli settlers and Palestinian extremists have been implicated in acts of harassment and violence targeting Christians, contributing to a steady decline in the population as many seek safety elsewhere. Across the Middle East, Christian demographics have been shrinking amid ongoing conflicts and instability.

In Israel, monitoring groups and church authorities have documented a rise in anti-Christian sentiment, particularly in Jerusalem’s Old City, where extremist settlers have reportedly vandalized and torched Christian sites. The recent escalation of violence following the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza has further destabilized the region, with Israeli military operations resulting in significant casualties and displacement among Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza.

Efforts to maintain peace and protect religious minorities remain critical. The Palestinian Authority Police have pledged to prevent sectarian strife, while international observers continue to monitor the situation closely. The attack at the Holy Redeemer Church serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by religious communities in conflict zones.

The incident also highlights the importance of interfaith dialogue and cooperation, as emphasized by recent statements from the Vatican calling for peace and reconciliation in the Holy Land.

The Holy Redeemer Church’s response to the attack, including the rapid restoration of the Christmas tree and the inclusive ceremony, illustrates a community’s determination to uphold faith and unity in the face of adversity.
