TSA Air Marshals Mistaken for ICE Agents, Heckled by Protesters in Los Angeles
LYNWOOD, Calif. — A group of federal air marshals from the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) found themselves the target of a hostile confrontation Wednesday evening when anti-immigration protesters mistakenly identified them as U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. The incident occurred outside Ten-Raku, a Korean BBQ restaurant located in the Plaza Mexico shopping center in Lynwood, a city in the Los Angeles metropolitan area.
The air marshals, tasked with protecting passengers and crew aboard U.S. aircraft, were dining together when a crowd of agitators gathered outside, heckling and verbally harassing them. According to a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the TSA personnel were “surrounded and viciously harassed by a frenzied mob.” The spokesperson added that these actions were incited by left-wing political rhetoric targeting all Department of Homeland Security employees.
Such cases of mistaken identity have become increasingly common as anti-ICE activism intensifies across the country. Protesters often conflate different federal agencies involved in immigration enforcement and homeland security, leading to confusion and, at times, confrontations with personnel who are not affiliated with immigration enforcement. The TSA, which operates under DHS but focuses on aviation security, is frequently mistaken for ICE, which is responsible for immigration enforcement and removal operations.
The incident in Lynwood follows similar reports nationwide where TSA officers and other federal employees have been misidentified and targeted by activists. The Transportation Security Administration has reiterated its commitment to the safety of the traveling public and condemned any harassment of its officers.
Immigration enforcement remains a deeply polarizing issue in the United States, with ICE drawing significant criticism from activist groups who oppose the agency’s policies and practices. The Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency has faced protests and calls for reform or abolition, particularly in the wake of controversial immigration raids and family separations.
Meanwhile, the Department of Homeland Security continues to emphasize the distinct roles of its various components, including TSA, ICE, and Customs and Border Protection (CBP). According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, each agency operates with specific missions, and confusion among the public can lead to misunderstandings and unintended confrontations.
Local law enforcement was present but did not intervene immediately, as the situation did not escalate to physical violence. The TSA air marshals eventually left the scene without injury. The DHS has called for respect toward all federal employees performing their duties and urged protesters to verify identities before engaging.
As immigration debates continue to dominate national discourse, incidents like the one in Lynwood highlight the challenges faced by federal workers and underscore the importance of clear communication about the roles of different agencies. The DHS and TSA have both reaffirmed their commitment to public safety and the protection of their personnel amid a charged political environment.
