Ukraine and Russia Face U.S.-Set Deadline to Reach Peace Agreement Amid Ongoing Conflict
KIEV, Ukraine — As the war between Ukraine and Russia enters its fourth year, both nations are reportedly working under a deadline set by the United States to reach a peace agreement by early summer. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed on February 7 that the U.S. has proposed a June deadline for Moscow and Kyiv to finalize a deal to end the conflict, which has devastated the region and strained global security.
“The Americans are proposing the parties end the war by the beginning of this summer and will probably put pressure on the parties precisely according to this schedule,” Zelenskyy told reporters, according to The Associated Press. He added that if the deadline is not met, the U.S. administration would intensify efforts to push both sides toward resolution. “They want a clear schedule of all events,” Zelenskyy said, highlighting the urgency behind the diplomatic initiative.
The peace talks, facilitated by the U.S., come as Russia continues to launch aggressive strikes targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. Just a day before the latest round of negotiations was set to resume in Abu Dhabi, Russian forces conducted a record missile barrage, further crippling Ukraine’s power grid and complicating humanitarian conditions. Images from Zaporizhzhia showed the aftermath of a Russian airstrike that destroyed a stray dog shelter, underscoring the conflict’s toll on civilians.
Despite ongoing hostilities, Zelenskyy reported securing a security pledge from the United States contingent on a cessation of fighting. However, Russia remains firm on its territorial demands and continues to reject the deployment of NATO troops in the region, complicating the path to peace.
The U.S. Department of State has been actively involved in the trilateral talks, emphasizing the importance of diplomacy to resolve the conflict. The State Department has reiterated its commitment to supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty while encouraging dialogue.
