Venezuelan National Charged with Attempted Murder in Florida Beach Drowning
STUART, Fla. — Authorities arrested Said Alexander Hernandez Gonzalez, a 26-year-old Venezuelan national, following an alleged attempted drowning attack on a woman at Tiger Shores Beach in Martin County. The incident, described by law enforcement as a random and unprovoked assault, occurred late Sunday night as the victim was walking along the shoreline.
According to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, Hernandez Gonzalez approached the woman from behind around 11 p.m., struck her, and forcibly pushed her into the ocean. He then allegedly held her underwater in an attempt to drown her before fleeing the scene. The victim survived the attack and was able to seek help.
Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek characterized the case as “extremely alarming,” emphasizing the difficulty law enforcement faces when investigating random acts of violence. “Random acts of violence like this are some of the most difficult crimes to solve — and that’s exactly what this was,” he told local media.
Hernandez Gonzalez was taken into custody on charges of attempted murder. His status as an illegal immigrant has drawn attention amid ongoing debates about immigration enforcement. The arrest was made with cooperation from federal authorities, including the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which tracks and detains individuals violating immigration laws.
Florida has seen heightened scrutiny over crimes involving undocumented immigrants, with officials calling for increased border security and enforcement measures. The Department of Homeland Security regularly publishes data on immigration enforcement actions, highlighting the complexity of managing public safety alongside immigration policy.
The victim was reportedly on her phone while walking along the beach when the attack occurred, making the assault appear entirely random and without provocation. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and are urging anyone with additional information to come forward.
This case adds to a series of recent incidents that have sparked public concern about beach safety and the presence of undocumented immigrants in Florida. Law enforcement agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, often assist local authorities in cases involving violent crime and public safety threats.
As the investigation proceeds, community leaders and officials are calling for vigilance and cooperation to prevent similar attacks. Meanwhile, Hernandez Gonzalez remains in custody pending further legal proceedings.
