Wallaby Named Rex Escapes New Jersey Sanctuary, Spotted at Local Walmart
WILLIAMSTOWN, N.J. — A small wallaby named Rex has captured the attention of local authorities and residents after escaping from the Lots of Love Farm animal sanctuary and wandering into a Walmart parking lot in Williamstown, New Jersey. The marsupial, a smaller cousin of the kangaroo, slipped out of its barn enclosure Monday night despite efforts to shelter it from the cold winds.
Ron Layden, owner of Lots of Love Farm, reported on social media that Rex had been brought indoors to protect him from the chilly weather but managed to find an exit. Shortly thereafter, Monroe Township Police received multiple calls about a “kangaroo” seen hopping near East Malaga Road and South Black Horse Pike. Officers responded promptly but were unable to capture the elusive animal.
Videos shared on social media show Rex hopping through the Walmart parking lot, drawing both amusement and concern from shoppers. Police last tracked the wallaby into a wooded area adjacent to the store, but the search remains ongoing. Authorities urge residents to exercise caution and not to approach the animal, which is not native to the region.
The incident highlights the challenges animal sanctuaries face in securing exotic species, especially during winter months. Wallabies, native to Australia, are not commonly found in New Jersey, and their escape poses unique logistical issues for local law enforcement and wildlife officials.
Monroe Township Police continue to coordinate with Lots of Love Farm and wildlife experts to safely recapture Rex. Residents can find updates and safety information on the township’s official website. The New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife provides guidance on handling escaped exotic animals and can be reached for assistance.
This unusual escape adds to a growing list of animal rescues and wildlife encounters reported across the country recently, from foxes trapped in water tanks in England to deer stranded on frozen lakes in Connecticut. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service offers resources and support for managing such incidents to ensure public safety and animal welfare.
As the search continues, the community remains hopeful that Rex will be safely returned to the sanctuary. In the meantime, the wallaby’s unexpected visit to a retail parking lot has become a local curiosity, reminding residents of the unpredictable nature of wildlife and the importance of responsible animal care.
