WASHINGTON, D.C. — Over the past six months, a Washington family has found themselves inundated with more than 100 Amazon packages mistakenly delivered to their home instead of a nearby hotel. The packages, intended for guests at the Arlo hotel located just about a mile away, have ranged from cat food and vitamin supplements to even a chainsaw, according to Brittany, a resident who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Brittany explained that the confusion stems from a one-letter difference between her address and the hotel’s address, which appears just after hers on Amazon’s delivery options. “We’ve received everything from cat food to vitamin supplements to even a chainsaw,” she told NBC4 Washington. Guests at the Arlo hotel appear to be inadvertently selecting her address when placing orders online, causing the packages to be delivered to her doorstep.

The constant stream of misdelivered parcels has led to late-night disturbances, with visitors knocking on the door after 8 p.m. to retrieve their belongings. “It’s been a lot of late nights, which is pretty tough when you have a kid,” Brittany said. Despite the inconvenience, the family has avoided confrontation, choosing not to engage or answer the door to unknown visitors.

Amazon has acknowledged the issue and is actively investigating the delivery errors. The company stated it is working on a solution to prevent such mix-ups in the future. This incident echoes a similar case earlier this year in San Jose, California, where a woman received hundreds of unwanted packages due to her address being mistakenly listed as a return location for a seller on Amazon. In that case, Amazon retrieved the packages and committed to a permanent fix.

The Federal Trade Commission emphasizes the importance of clear and accurate shipping information to protect consumers and businesses alike. Meanwhile, residents like Brittany are caught in the crossfire of these logistical errors, facing disruptions to their daily lives.

Experts from the United States Postal Service note that address verification systems and customer vigilance are key components in reducing delivery mistakes. However, when addresses are similar or differ by only a single character, errors can easily occur, especially with automated systems.

For now, Brittany and her family continue to manage the influx of packages, hoping for a swift resolution. The situation underscores the growing pains of modern delivery logistics and the need for improved safeguards in online ordering platforms.
