Zelenskyy Says Trump Open to Decades-Long U.S. Security Guarantees for Ukraine
PALM BEACH, Fla. — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy revealed Monday that U.S. President Donald Trump indicated a willingness to consider providing Ukraine with security guarantees extending for decades. The announcement came after their meeting Sunday at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate, as Ukraine continues to face a protracted and deadly war with Russia.
In a series of posts on the social media platform X, Zelenskyy outlined that the current negotiating framework includes security guarantees lasting 15 years, with options for extension. However, he emphasized Ukraine’s desire for a longer-term commitment, suggesting 30, 40, or even 50 years of guarantees. “It would then become a historic decision by President Trump,” Zelenskyy wrote, adding that Trump said the U.S. would consider such an extension.
During a joint press conference, Trump confirmed that the United States aims to work closely with European allies, who would assume a significant role in supporting Ukraine’s security. “We wanna work with Europe,” Trump said, noting that while Europe would “take over a big part of it,” the U.S. would continue to assist.
Zelenskyy also stressed that Trump “confirmed strong security guarantees” during their discussions and that these assurances would be subject to a vote by the United States Congress. This procedural step underscores the formal nature of any such commitment and the necessity of legislative approval.
